Arsenal Vs Newcastle United Ended In A Goalless Draw

Arsenal could only collect one point in week 19 of the 2022/2023 Premier League. This result could have widened the distance with its closest rival in the standings, Manchester City.

Arsenal had to settle for only a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium. The hosts had more than a dozen chances to score.

However, Newcastle tight defense in the penalty box was a factor that made it difficult for Gabriel Martinelli et al. to score goals. Newcastle also had several chances but failed to take advantage.

Arsenal is currently still at the top of the standings with 44 points. Newcastle keeps the distance in 3rd place with a score of 35 points.

Arsenal appears dominant at home. Facing Newcastle medium block, the Gunners could still break through Martin Odegaard's creativity and the speed of the wingers.

Arsenal immediately had a golden opportunity in the 5th minute through Bukayo Saka. Goalkeeper Nick Pope still thwarted his shot from a very narrow-angle.

Throughout 45 minutes, Arsenal outperformed the visitors with 63 percent possession. However, Arsenal had difficulty penetrating Newcastle tight defense.

Saka's shot was the only shot on target that Arsenal could create throughout the first half. The rest are mostly blocked by opposing players.

Meanwhile, Newcastle had six opportunities to threaten Arsenal's goal. Three were from outside the penalty box, and the rest were close to the destination.

Like Arsenal, Newcastle should have taken advantage of every opportunity to score. As a result, the first half ended in a goalless draw.

The second half was still the same for Arsenal. Even though he often pushed his way into the Newcastle penalty box, no opportunities could be converted into goals.

The key to Newcastle's success was piling up to ten players in the penalty box when Arsenal's wingers penetrated. This method can tightly close the creation of opportunities for the host.

So even though Arsenal was able to create more than ten shots, most of these shots were just off the mark or blocked by The Magpies' players.

Arsenal themselves barely have a solution to dismantle the Newcastle defense. Even up to the 76th minute, Mikel Arteta only replaced Defender Ben White with Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Arsenal most significant chance came in the 88th minute. Right in front of the goalmouth, Eddie Nketiah tried to break into the Newcastle goal. However, Pope reacted quickly with his feet to deny the opportunity.

Newcastle also had the best chance in the 90+1 minute. Unfortunately, it was as if the Newcastle players did not dare to complete the opportunity and reorganized Arsenal's defense again to quell attacks.
